Elite keypad and intercom repair in Anaheim typically runs between $185 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the existing keypad, replacing the board inside, or installing a new unit that matches your Elite gate operator. Most Anaheim owners catch it in one of two moments. Either the keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move, which points to the relay or wiring between the keypad and the control board. Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite gate operators use a proprietary communication protocol between the keypad and the control board, so not every aftermarket keypad will talk to them correctly. The Elite SL-3000, SL-1000, and the older CSW200 series each use different keypad inputs. Before you buy anything, look for the model tag on the side of the operator arm or on the control board itself. The model number is stamped there, and the keypad type follows from it.
We won’t install a generic keypad on an Elite system. The cheap import keypads that work fine on a swing gate from another brand often fail to send the right pulse to the Elite board, and the gate either ignores the code or opens on a delay that confuses everyone. For Elite specifically, we use OEM Elite keypads when they’re available, and a known-good aftermarket keypad we’ve tested on dozens of Anaheim jobs when the OEM part is backordered. The aftermarket units run about 30% less than OEM, and we’ll tell you which one we’re quoting before you decide.
One gotcha worth knowing: the Elite swing arm operators manufactured before 2012 use a 4-wire keypad harness. Newer units use a 5-wire harness with a dedicated ground. If someone hands you a keypad that doesn’t match the harness on your control board, the install will fail or short the board. We check the harness before we touch anything.
Signs Your Elite Keypad or Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but the gate does nothing. The keypad is still sending audio feedback, but the relay isn’t closing. That’s usually a dead relay on the keypad board or a broken wire between the keypad and the control board, not a dead keypad.
- The gate opens on the first code but not the second. Classic Elite issue when the keypad’s memory chip is scorched by repeated Anaheim heat. The first code works from the keypad’s temporary buffer, then the board forgets the entry codes.
- Intercom rings but the voice is garbled. Corrosion on the intercom speaker terminals is the usual cause. We see this more often in Anaheim homes within a few miles of the Santa Ana River or on properties with heavy irrigation overspray near the gate.
- Keypad lights up but some buttons don’t respond. Membrane keypads wear unevenly. The most-used digits fail first. If the 2, 4, and 8 buttons are dead but 1, 3, and 5 still work, that’s physical wear, not a board problem.
- The gate opens on its own or ignores the close command. A failing intercom or keypad can send phantom signals to the control board. We isolate the keypad by disconnecting it at the board, and if the ghosting stops, the keypad is the culprit.

Elite keypads and intercoms run on 24-volt DC control wiring, which is low voltage and generally safe to handle. If you want to check something before calling, you can look for an obvious break in the keypad cable, tighten the terminal screws at the control board, and verify the keypad hasn’t been hit by a weed whacker. Those are safe checks.
What goes wrong with DIY is the harness mismatch. If you buy a keypad online and wire it wrong, you can short the control board, and then you’re paying for a keypad plus a new board plus the labor to undo it.
