BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Anaheim Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements across Anaheim, with most installed jobs running between $950 and $1,850 depending on your model series and whether the arm bracket or capacitor survived the failure. Same-day replacement is available for most BFT swing and slide motors we carry, and we come to you with the common failure parts already on the truck. The typical caller reaches us after the gate starts grinding, stops mid-cycle, or simply refuses to move and shows a fault light they’ve never seen before.

BFT motors are workhorses, but Anaheim’s heat and dust load put real stress on the capacitors and limit switches. When a BFT board throws a fault code you haven’t seen in the manual, the motor itself is often still salvageable. That’s the first thing we check before quoting a full replacement.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

We service the full BFT residential and light-commercial lineup common in Anaheim driveways: the Phobos series (Phobos N, Phobos NL, Phobos BT) for swing gates, the Deimos series (Deimos BT, Deimos Ultra BT) for heavier swing or slide applications, and the Icaro and Kustos slide-motor lines. The model plate is typically on the underside of the motor housing or inside the release-key cover. Write down the full model string before you call, for example “Phobos N BT A25” rather than just “a BFT motor.” The suffix matters: it tells us the board generation and whether your limit system is magnetic or mechanical.

One compatibility gotcha we see in Anaheim: the Phobos NL and Phobos N are not interchangeable on arm-bracket mounts. The NL uses a shorter travel arm and a different bracket hole pattern, and a homeowner who buys the wrong one on a parts site ends up with a motor that physically won’t mount. We always verify the bracket spacing in person before quoting the swap. For OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s own motors are well-built, but aftermarket capacitors from a reputable brand often outlast OEM in Anaheim’s summer heat for half the price. The motors themselves we keep OEM where it matters.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • Gate starts, then reverses mid-travel. This is usually a failing limit switch or a capacitor that’s dropping below spec under load. The motor still wants to work, but the board reads the travel as obstructed.
  • Humming sound, no movement. Classic capacitor failure. The windings are getting power but the motor can’t develop starting torque. In Anaheim garages that bake at 110°F in summer, this is the single most common BFT failure we replace.
  • Gate moves slower than it did six months ago. Worn brushes or a tired capacitor. If the movement is smooth but sluggish, you usually have weeks of life left. If it’s jerky, plan for imminent failure.
  • Intermittent operation, works after resting. The thermal overload is tripping because the motor is drawing more current than it should. That’s a motor winding problem, not a control-board problem. Replacing the board won’t fix it.
  • Error code on the control board that clears and returns. Note the exact code. On BFT boards, a recurring E7 or E2 (model-dependent) often points to motor feedback sensor failure, not an obstruction. We read these codes before touching anything.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Anaheim, a complete BFT gate motor replacement installed runs:

  • Phobos N / Phobos NL swing motor: $950 to $1,350 installed
  • Deimos BT swing or slide motor: $1,250 to $1,850 installed
  • Icaro slide motor: $1,400 to $1,900 installed
  • Capacitor-only repair: $140 to $260 installed, same visit

These prices include the motor, all mounting hardware, travel-limit setup, force adjustment, and a full cycle test with the safety edges and photo-eyes in place. You get the written price before any work starts, under Haven Standard Clause 1, and the completed job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. What pushes you toward the top of the range: rusted brackets that need fabrication, a failed control board in the same housing, or a gate that’s out of rack alignment and needs mechanical correction before the new motor goes in.

DIY or Call Us?

A BFT gate motor runs on 115V or 240V and stores enough energy in its capacitor to give you a real shock even with the breaker off. That’s not a caution, that’s the reason we discharge the capacitor on every motor we open. We don’t recommend any owner open the motor housing or touch the board wiring. What you can safely check yourself: whether the gate moves freely by hand with the release key pulled, whether the breaker is tripped, and whether anything is physically blocking the track. If the gate moves freely by hand but won’t move under power, the failure is in the motor or board and it’s time to call us at (657) 567-5799.

Adrian Vance grew up watching access systems fail before they failed completely, and our approach to a BFT replacement is the same: we name what we found, name what it costs, leave the gate quieter than we found it.
